Introduction
It is important to make copyright arrangements at the beginning of a project. Discuss these issues with all people involved (speakers, linguists, IRB representative, archive).
Types of consent
You should have an idea of what types of things you want consent for. Here are some potential uses of language documentation:
- Archive with limited access: make sure to specify conditions
- Archive with access by certain people: identify groups to access
- Archive with public access: think about the pros and cons of public access
- Publish whole work: e.g. transcribed/translated, CD, DVD
- Publish excerpts: e.g. grammars, articles, books
- Publish derivative works
- Public performance: e.g. broadcast
- Use whole/excerpts in classes (photocopy, download w/password)
- Commercial uses: e.g. Madonna samples Achuar
Documenting consent
Be prepared and know how you can document consent:
- Signed license agreements
- Recorded license agreements (transcribed and translated)
- Relate agreement to resource via metadata
- In the metadata, document the Codes of Conduct adhered to, for future reference
